The Sunshine Coast Hinterland

Updated: Apr 8, 2019

Lots of talk about all the coastal suburbs such as Noosa, Mooloolaba and Alexandra Headland but what about the stunning Hinterland! The Sunshine Coast not only has one of Australia's most beautiful coastlines, it is also blessed with a gorgeous hinterland, just waiting to be explored.

Here are 5 of my favourite places to visit and why in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland!

Montville

Montville gets a special mention here, I'm actually getting married here next month! Soo exciting..

Montville is a quaint and gorgeous place to visit, it's one of my favourite places to have a lunch or breakfast, wander through the main street or even go for a hike at nearby Kondililla Falls National Park. For an especially a picturesque brekkie or lunch check out The Edge Restaurant its unmatched views span all the way to the coast and they have a fantastic food and drinks menu.

Mary Cairncross Reserve

If you've driven up to check out Maleny (which I strongly encourage) then you can't miss heading on a bit further to the Mary Cairncross Reserve. The reserve is spread over 55 hectares but has a lovely walk which is all flat and an easy 30 minute or less loop around. I highly recommend taking a walk through, and don't forget your gold coin donation for the Rainforest Discovery Centre. On your way out be sure to stop in at the Mountain View cafe to enjoy the absolutely spectacular views overlooking the Glass House Mountains!

Baroon Pocket Dam

Just a very short drive from Montville you will find Lake Baroon. A lovely spot for a picnic, swim or a walk up to the look out point. There are no motorised boats or jet skis allowed on the Lake so its a very tranquil and peaceful spot, some people have even seen Koala's here recently! If you didn't pack a picnic then check out Dining on the Deck for some authentic Aussie food and a panoramic view of the water, mountains and surrounding rainforest.

Maleny Botanic Gardens and Bird World

This beautiful spot sprawls over 7 hectares and features lush exotic plants and gardens as well as large open aviaries with an array of exotic species such as Macaws. The birds are especially tame and love to sit on visitors shoulders - or their heads! Its the number one "thing to do" in Maleny as rated by visitors on Tripadvisor.com.au

Australia Zoo

Steve Irwin's legacy is Australia Zoo which is still owned and run by his family. The Zoo is large and sprawling with expansive plains for the African animals and still has of course the famous Croc Feeding shows as well as lots of other animal feeding shows and interactive experiences.
